GLENBROOK PLAYERS SEASON 2027

2027 Season Announcement: A Year of Australian Theatre

Two productions. One proud tradition of storytelling that holds a mirror to who we are.

COSI

by Louis Nowra

14–23 May 2027

We open our 2027 season with one of the great Australian stage classics. Set in a burnt-out Melbourne psychiatric hospital in 1971, Cosifollows Lewis, a young idealist recruited to direct a group of patients in a production of Mozart's opera Così fan tutte— despite having no experience, no budget, and a cast who can barely agree on what love even means.

Featuring a rich ensemble of characters spanning a wide range of ages, Cosi is treasured for its enormous heart, its riotous humour, and its refusal to let any character become a punchline. Beneath the laughs sits a genuinely moving meditation on love, madness, idealism and the transformative power of putting on a show — themes that have made it a beloved fixture of Australian stages and classrooms alike since its 1992 premiere. It's a play that trusts its audience to laugh withits characters, not at them, and that generosity is exactly why it endures.

HOW TO VOTE

by Julian Larnach

5–14 November 2027

For our second production, we turn to a sharp new Australian voice with How To Vote, first staged in 2022. A biting satirical comedy, the play turns its gaze on the theatre of Australian politics itself, filtered through the wonderfully petty, high-stakes world of a university campaign for Student President.

How To Votecontinues a proud Glenbrook Players tradition, following our recent productions of A Cheery Soul (2024) and Holding the Man (2025), not only in its distinctly Australian voice, but in its approach to casting. As with those two productions, roles are open to actors of any age, regardless of the character's age as written. With 26 vivid roles, from ruthless campaign strategists to true believers, opportunists, and everyone caught in between, the play offers a genuine opportunity for a large, diverse cast to shine. It's a play about ambition, compromise and the absurd machinery of democracy, told with wit, warmth, and an unmistakably Australian sense of the ridiculous.
